In this scene, we meet guards who have recently seen a strange sight...

In this scene...
- we meet the King/Uncle/Usurper Claudius (would you want to listen to him all day?)
- we hear Hamlet complain about how depressing it is that suicide is against the rules (find the line with 'self-slaughter')
- we listen to Hamlet's reaction to Gertrude's recent marriage to her brother-in-law Claudius
- Horatio comes running in to tell Hamlet he saw the ghost of King Hamlet (deceased dad)


Check for understanding:
1. Does King Claudius do a good job of sweeping his brother's recent death and his own recent marriage under the rug?
2. What do you think Hamlet's most depressing lines are?
3. How good of friends are Horatio and Hamlet?



We meet Laertes and Ophelia, brother and sister and children of Polonius.

1. Does Polonius give good advice to his son?
2. Does Polonius give good advice to his daughter?
3. How does Ophelia differ in her reaction to her brother's orders versus her fathers?



The royal party is up all night partying while Horatio and Hamlet waiting on the castle walls.

1. What are Horatio and Hamlet waiting for?
2. What doesn't Horatio want Hamlet to do?
3. What does Hamlet do and why?
